Thing 23: Reflection

Well. It’s way past May but I finally made it. After setting up a gazillion accounts and exploring I feel like I have gained some knowledge. My fear of trying new technology is somewhat diminished and feel I have a better understanding of social media and the powerful tools available out there. I do use several things regularly I didn’t know about before this training–YouSendIt and Tiny URL are both very useful to name a few. Thanks for the opportunity. It was well delivered and managed. I know I drove EC and AL crazy doing my “ things” out of order. Arivaderchi!

Thing 22: User Choice–Skype & Keychain

I just set up a Skype account before I went on vacation. I actually video chatted with my sister in Naples, Florida while I was in Naples, Italy. How cool is that! The world is shrinking.

Another cool thing I just discovered, Keychain–a password management system for Mac. How many passwords did I set up just for 23 Things alone? I have them all written down on paper (not a good idea) because I don’t know a tool like this for PCs, but am sure there had got to be one. I got my first Mac in 1987 and haven’t gone PC since then, except at work.

Thing 2: Google Reader

I guess I’m just an old fashioned kind of gal. It’s easier for me to just go to my “favorites” tab because that’s my habit. I am sure some people love this, but I kind of don’t see the point for me. I did set up and account and give it a try before making this judgment.

Thing 8: Tagging

Ohhhh….Wordle is FUN! Could spend hours! However, couldn’t get a copy of what I did to appear here. Oh well. Tagging–a very useful thing in the library world. We use tags on our Unshused blog. I have not used any tags on this blog until now…

Thing 6: Digg

Interesting to see what people find most intersting on the internet. Don’t really see that it has any usefulness here except to play with during lunch. Would be nice to would ‘digg” something from one of our increasing online presence. But it may be like finding a needle in a haystack. Not my favorite “thing.”

Thing 10: Good Reads

I’ve had a Good Reads account for some time. I love the features–read a-likes, book trading, etc. I read so much I get a third of the way into a book and realized I’ve read it. If I could keep up with putting all the books I read on it would be a great tool. Problems is, I update it infrequently. Maybe I’ll go do that right now!! I have turned several friends on to this tool and they’re addicted. I also like the newsletters. I have not played with Library Thing. Don’t feel the need because I like Good Reads. Could the library have an account and add a link on Facebook? All these online promotional options are making my head spin!

Thing 4: Picture sharing

I have a Shutterfly account. Nice letting family and friends see photos on the web. I would like to see us have a Flickr account to promote programs/services/events. Plano Public Library does this very effectively and think it would be especially useful to youth services. Nice to have all our pictures archived in one place for all to see, not just on our blog.

Finally! We get to tweet about the great stuff we do @ FPL! Author visits, new book arrivals. It will especially useful in the summer to let parents know exactly when we run out of summer reading program tickets! Very exciting. I’m on the Twitter team and it’s fun, fun, fun!
